The growing district of Taoyuan is just outside Taipei, and is a major area for technology and business. With a skyline full of skyscrapers, there are many newly developed industrial areas where companies from around the world have headquarters. If you need to escape from the city, there are also plenty of spectacular mountain areas not far from the centre, with serene hiking trails and soothing hot springs.

Daxi Old Street offers a glimpse of what Taoyuan was like before all the redevelopment, and is popular with international visitors who want to enjoy some traditional culture. Along the street you'll find old-fashioned shops decorated with large pagodas and lanterns, many of them selling handmade goods and souvenirs. It's also a great place to eat, with lots of small noodle bars and places serving authentic Taiwanese cuisine. The Shimen Reservoir is a pleasant place for walking, fishing, or in certain areas, swimming, and provides a serene environment surrounded by mountains. There are tree-lined walkways overlooking the water, or you could hire a bike and zip along the lanes, taking in the sights. Windows on China Theme Park is a unique attraction where you can see scale model versions of the world's most iconic landmarks, from the Taj Mahal to Mount Rushmore, all intricately recreated with tiny details. Once you've explored the globe, there's a fun amusement park with colourful rides, a water park where you can cool off on hot days, and a theatre that often has Chinese acrobatics and other family friendly fun.

The West Side is where most people live, and the area has several parks, busy night markets, international shops, and a wide selection of cuisine on offer, with many restaurants owned by those who have immigrated to the area. Luzhu District is closet to Taipei, with many commuters living in modern, high rise blocks. How to get to Taoyuan

Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport is the country's largest airport, and is conveniently set in the Taoyuan area. There are regular flights arriving from around the world, and you can grab a local bus from outside the terminals and get to the centre of Taoyuan in about 25 minutes. Trains between Taoyuan and Taipei's main station take just over half an hour, or there's an excellent network of buses around the two cities, with most journeys taking less than an hour.
