Bayeux Hotels

With memories of World War II’s horrifying battles lying all around - and as the home of the extraordinary, embroidered masterpiece of the Bayeux Tapestry - this town has been woven into history time and time again. Unlike many of Normandy’s settlements, Bayeux escaped the battles largely unscathed, and it was the first city to be liberated by the allies on the morning following June 6th’s decisive amphibious invasion. Despite its varied history, and picturesque appeal, there’s little doubt that most people are here for one reason - to see the 70-metre long tapestry, which richly details the Norman triumph at the Battle of Hastings.

Things to see

Unsurprisingly, the Bayeux Tapestry Museum is top of the list of things to do when visiting Bayeux - and the history of 1064 and 1066 is painstakingly detailed in its delicate fabric. Follow the story of the Battle of Hastings - which saw William the Conqueror triumph over King Harold II, claiming the English throne from the Anglo Saxons. Terracotta and amber threads bring the horses, soldiers, and ships to life across the course of the wide linen canvas, which is carefully illuminated to help you spot every stunning detail. The Cathedrale Notre Dame de Bayeux is a work of art in itself, and the William the Conqueror consecrated building glows orange at night, as it towers over the surrounding houses with elegant beauty. Sweeping arches await inside, giving the colossal ‘Bell of Peace and Freedom’ - created to mark the 70th anniversary of the D-Day Landings - the grandest of settings. Reminders of both world wars are everywhere, and you can pay your respects at heartbreakingly vast military graveyards, before walking on the same sands that Allied forces battled fiercely to liberate - at Arromanches. The area’s peaceful beaches are still peppered with ominous pill boxes, and remains of the Atlantic Wall fortress, built to protect the occupied coastline from invasion.

Hotels in Bayeux

Experience the romance of the sun rising on a warm French morning, as you stay in the rustic surrounds of a carefully converted chateau. Stir yourself awake with a strong coffee on the lawn, listening to the birds tweeting, before grabbing a racket and unleashing your best serves on the tennis courts. While history’s everywhere in Bayeux, the familiar comforts of a modern hotel may appeal more - so choose from a simple but functional room, or a more lavish option - where you’ll have the space to unwind in a sprawling bedroom, and dip into a rippling swimming pool. WiFi will help you to plan out your itinerary, or you can kick back with a freshly brewed tea or coffee in your room in your Bayeux hotel, hopping through international television channels, for example, Hotel Le Bayeux.

Where to stay

Bayeux is pleasantly compact and walkable, so you can be enjoying the thick cream and sharp apples of indulgent tarte normande in no time. You’ll also be staying within walking distance of the Museum of the Battle of Normandy, where you can see the tanks that fought for this landscape during the D-Day invasions. The British and Commonwealth War Memorial is close by, and its sea of identical white graves is truly heart-breaking - especially when you stop to note the ages of the dead, taken far too young.

How to get to Bayeux

If you’re already in France, reach Bayeux by driving up from Paris in around 3 hours. Those travelling across the Channel from England, can take a ferry to Caen or Le Havre, and rent a car to explore the beaches and battle-sites. Trains also run to Bayeux from Paris, where you can jump aboard organised bus tours.
