Russell Square Hotels

A tranquil, leafy spot at the heart of Bloomsbury, Russell Square is surrounded by some of the finest cultural and intellectual institutions. The silence which sometimes descends on this little quarter, broken only by birdsong and the swish of a passing bicycle, can make it feel far removed from central London, whilst being just a few minutes’ walk from the unrelenting hustle and bustle of Oxford Street. It’s a place for sipping café lattes and enjoying a few minutes’ peace.

Things to see

At the southwest corner of Russell Square, you’ll find the supremely grand British Museum, which contains innumerable treasures from across the world and from across historical eras. It’s best to plan to take on specific sections of this vast place at a time, otherwise it can overwhelm. One of the most popular exhibits is the Rosetta Stone, around which a small gaggle of enthusiasts is always gathered. The Egyptian rooms will transport you to the great pyramids of Giza, while the opulence of the China and South Asia exhibits will leave your head spinning. University College London is located just to the north, and among its academic buildings, it’s home to the Grant Museum of Zoology and the Bloomsbury Theatre – a popular venue for comedy. After all that, why not take a moment to relax in Russell Square? There’s nothing better than flopping down in dappled sunlight beneath leafy trees.

To the north, in Bayswater, you can find some budget Hyde Park hotels, along with luxury options, within minutes of Paddington Station.

How to get to Russell Square

Russell Square has its own tube station, which is on the Piccadilly line. This makes getting here very simple if you’re coming from Heathrow, since the Piccadilly line runs all the way from the airport terminals, so you won’t even need to change trains. It can be quicker, however, to take the Heathrow Express to Paddington Station, a journey of just 15 minutes, then hop on the tube. Tottenham Court Road, Holborn, and Goodge Street are all nearby tube stations. Both Euston and King’s Cross/St Pancras stations, which have national rail services, are within a 15-minute walk of Russell Square.
