Deserted Beaches, an Island Paradise, and City Lights - Where to Stay in Townsville
Whether you dream of spoiling yourself on a tropical island, you're looking for a secluded, comfy beach house for the family, or you're after a sea-view room for 2, Townsville has you covered. Those passing through on their way to Cairns and other destinations in Tropical Queensland will also find convenient motels on the highways around town.
Townsville inner city
The center of town is where to stay if you want to be in the city’s business and shopping heart. The restaurant and pub epicenter around Flinders and Palmer Streets is on your doorstep, and you can cover most of the sights on foot. A relaxed stroll and a swim on The Strand are only minutes away.
Downtown Townsville offers a choice of accommodation from friendly bed-and-breakfasts to midrange and upscale resort hotels. You’ll find backpackers hostels amid the nightlife around Palmer Street, and self-contained apartments ranging from the functional to fancy.

The Strand
If you want Townsville’s long swathe of palm-lined beach on your doorstep, you should put your bags down near The Strand. A dip in clear waters is steps away, before breakfast at an esplanade café. And there’s no more pleasant walk to the shops and eateries downtown than along the waterfront.
Around The Strand you’ll find lots of self-contained apartments, many with Coral Sea views. There are also hotels in various price categories, with more a "beach-vacation" feel than those in the city.

Northern beaches
Head north from Townsville and you’ll discover a series of pristine, often deserted beaches. Rowes Bay, Saunders, Bushland, and Balgal are all swathes of fine sand backing onto untainted bush. You’ll need wheels, but if you want peace, quiet, and untainted nature, this is where to come - and Townsville is 45 minutes away at the most.
In the enclaves north of Townsville you’ll find many self-contained holiday apartments and houses. There are campgrounds that offer cabins, comfortable resort motels, as well as family run bed-and-breakfasts.
