Shilin Night Market Hotels

A bustling nocturnal hub of food and fashion, Shilin Night Market is regarded by many as the biggest and best in the capital. Its streets and alleys glow with colourful signage, illuminating a labyrinth of shops, kiosks, and stalls, peddling all manner of goods to a flowing river of bargain hunters. The fragrant food court serves up a cornucopia of traditional tastes, from sizzling fried chicken to braised stinky tofu - and not forgetting the bubble tea. Loved by locals and visitors alike, no visit to Taipei is complete without swamping your senses here.

Things to see

One of the best places to throw yourself into local Taiwanese life, the night market really is a haven for snaring yourself a bargain. As well as over 500 food stalls selling deliciously inexpensive specialties, shoppers will find absolutely everything, from handmade trinkets and homeware, to clothes, accessories, and jewellery. Whilst the market is the star attraction of the Shilin district, the area is home to many other attractions too. Occupying an appropriately palatial building, the National Palace Museum is home to almost 700,000 ancient Chinese imperial artworks and artefacts. With many pieces in its collection once owned by great emperors, the museum encompasses more than 10,000 years’ worth of history. You’ll know you’ve arrived at the Taipei Astronomical Museum when you see the gigantic geometric dome that sits within its grounds. Offering a mesmerising glimpse into space, the museum’s engaging exhibits detail the methods of ancient astronomy, all the way to the complexities of space technology today.

The district’s retail haven (at least before the night market comes to life) is Tianmu Commercial Circle, an upscale residential neighbourhood and a trendy shopping hub for young fashionistas. Shilin is also home to the Shilin Official Residence – former abode of President Chiang Kai-shek.
